When is TDCS Therapy Recommended?
TDCS is not a first-line treatment for every condition. It is generally considered when a healthcare professional believes it may provide additional benefit alongside standard treatments.
The strength of evidence differs by condition.
1. Depression (Strongest evidence)
TDCS has been studied extensively for major depressive disorder, particularly in people with mild to moderate depression or those who have not fully responded to medication.
It is often used alongside:
- Medication
- Psychotherapy
- Lifestyle interventions
2. Stroke Rehabilitation
After a stroke, some brain areas become less active while others may become overactive.
TDCS may help:
- Improve arm and hand movement
- Enhance walking and balance
- Support speech rehabilitation (in selected cases)
It is typically combined with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.
3. Chronic Pain
Some chronic pain conditions involve altered brain processing of pain.
Research suggests TDCS may help reduce symptoms in conditions such as:
- Fibromyalgia
- Neuropathic pain
- Migraine (selected cases)
It is generally used as part of a broader pain management plan.
4. ADHD (Evidence still developing)
Researchers are investigating whether TDCS can improve:
- Attention
- Working memory
- Impulse control
- Executive functioning
Current evidence is promising but not yet strong enough for TDCS to be considered a standard ADHD treatment. It remains investigational in many settings.
5. Autism Spectrum Disorder (Research stage)
Several studies have explored whether TDCS may improve:
- Social communication
- Attention
- Repetitive behaviours
- Emotional regulation
However, evidence is still limited, and TDCS is not considered a standard treatment for autism. Behavioral therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and educational interventions remain the primary evidence-based treatments.
